The Story about the two designs.

Protect what keeps you alive. The Ocean.

My environmental activist / artivist story began when I wanted to write a book about ocean creatures. While I was researching for this book I spend a lot of time in the Paris Aquarium. One time I happened to go with my family. That day, the aquarium was putting on a show about plastic pollution and asked the children if they would volunteer to help clean up the plastic in the sea. My daughter raised her hand. I was very moved that she would want to help protect the sea creatures. This is the day that changed everything for me. When I got home that night, I researched ocean pollution. It shocked me to the core and this is really how everything began. I decided that I had to do something to help improve the situation and I then changed my fun numbers ocean story into a book that raises awareness of ocean pollution in a fun and motivating way, so that we all feel empowered to make a difference.

My love for the Ocean has been something that has always been present in my life. A competitive swimmer from a very young age I feel a sense of happiness floating in the water and, as it is something I’ve done for so many years, it’s also a sense of security.

Sea creatures often mistake plastic for food. It accumulates in their stomachs, making them feel full. They then stop eating, which can have dramatic consequences for them, such as starvation. ‘Over 1 million seabirds and 100.000 sea mammals are killed by pollution every year.' 'Right now there are as many as 51 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean. That's 51 trillion deadly hazards that animals need to avoid.'

1, 2, 3, Who's Cleaning the Sea?: is my Counting Picture Book About Protecting Our Planet in my educational tool to teach kids about plastic pollution without making them upset or scared. Education is the key to understanding how each of us can make a difference. Our future depends on our actions. I focused my artwork around conservation and raising awareness of environmental issues. Three years ago, I said I was only a mum who worried about our future on our planet. Today, I would say I’m an activist who protects our planet with all her heart and artistic power.

I decided to go to schools and raise awareness of plastic polllution, to make people understand the problems we are facing and that things have to change. I have created a few campaigns to help schools to reduce their waste and environmental footprint. One of that is “bring your own” and “change reaction”. You can find more information of how your school can get involved on my website.

My journey continued: after watching a talk by William Winram, who is a world record freediver and shark advocate. I created a heart-shaped image of sharks to express the need that we have to protect these incredible predators. Ellen Cuylaerts‘ beautiful images of stingrays and their diamond-shaped bodies also inspired me to add a diamond-shape form in the background of one of my drawings. An idea for a new concept book about shapes was formed.

This special heart shaped design is now available in the Ocean Culture Life Collection.

My second environmental book “Diamonds, Hearts and Sea Stars” is about connecting children to nature, and I thought the best way to do so is for them to discover nature and the incredible sea creatures that are part of it.

The World Oceans Day design is a combination of sea creatures found in my latest book. And is now available in the Ocean Culture Life Collection.

Since that day at the Aquarium, I felt it was my call to protect our oceans and I have been on a mission ever since.

Very proud and thankful to be collaborating with Ocean Culture Life.
